2009 Exploits

UnconferenceCONFERENCES.2009

10.30-31.09 BIL:PIL in San Diego.
Organizer and PR chair; check out the logo I designed for it on our homepage.

10.18-20.09 DMI “Design, Complexity and Change in Boston.
Got to hear the head of design for Virgin confirm that design really is the core of their being and competitive edge, duh!

10.6-7.09 Health 2.0 in San Francisco.
I don’t know if showing up for an hour counts as attendance. The acoustics really were poor and well, I just didn’t see anything new and exciting enough to keep me around.

10.5.09 HealthCampSFBay in San Leandro (Kaiser Innovation Center).
The team really pulled off a great event! We got Cisco and Intel to sponsor the event so lunch was fantastic and the wine and cheese we had for the closing remarks was a fantastic lubricant to get everyone to discuss what they had learned during the day!

6.17-18.09 DMI “Re-Thinking…Design” in San Francisco.
Helped DMI keep the conference moving while interacting with some of the top design leaders in the industry. Claudia Kotchka is my hero with her boundless energy and passion for design, it was great seeing her again!

5.18-21.09 BIO in Atlanta.
Pretty shocked to see just how stiff the biotech industry has become – where has all that scientific idealism gone?!

4.22-23.09 Health 2.0 in Boston.
I provided conference support for an amazing group of progressive thinkers trying to make radical changes to our broken healthcare system using Web 2.0 tools and concepts.

3.31-4.3.09 Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.
Attended and networked like hell. Also attended the onsite HealthCamp SF meeting with about 20 others…I think I might try to mobilize this group to meet more often.

2.7-8.09 BIL in Long Beach.
Unconference on technology and other random geeky stuff. Reconnected with nerd friends.

SPEAKING.2009Maren

10.30.09 ”How do we make healthcare sexy?” during BIL:PIL in San Diego.

7.21.09 ”The Archive: My 19 Volume Analog Life Log” from the Quantified Self Meet-Up at Jump Associates.
This was the first time I publicly presented my personal archive project explaining how and why I have documented my entire life. I asked the audience for suggestions on how to best digitize the hundreds of pages, integrate channels and organize the material.

6.2.09 ”Adding the Consumer to Healthcare Experience Design” at Adaptive Path.
During this lunch and learn presentation I discuss healthcare consumer experience issues I’ve seen during my career, what the [design] trends are and where I think the industry is going…slowly.

5.27.09 Moderator for HealthCampSFBay during Game Night at Tech Liminal.
This was the first HealthCampSFBay event – I introduced the organization and its goals before we opened up the panel to discuss trends in Health eGaming with speakers from Kaiser, Cryptozoo and Happy Year of the Ox.

5.14.09 “Power to the People! A Consumer-Focused Shift in Healthcare Thinking” at Cheskin Added Value.
This presentation covers what drives consumer-focused change advocates in the healthcare  industry, I cite an example of a project I worked on at Bayer then outline some of the key trends in the Health 2.0 industry.

ACTIVITIES.2009Race

11.27.09 12 Mile Murietta Falls Hike - Wet and cold…

8.23.09 9ish Mile Rock City @ Mt. Diablo Hike – Tried hard to avoid the poison oak this time…but Daniel played in it for fun.

8.15.09 13 Mile Muir Woods Hike -  Went all the way down to Rocky Point and had lunch with the starfish!

7.26.09 14 Mile Point Reyes Hike -  Exploring not-so-often-used trails that lead to Sunset Beach…

7.1-12.09 10 Day Silent Meditation Retreat – Vipassana meditation in the California mountains. When you take away all the distractions of daily life and do nothing but observe yourself for 10 hrs a day, long buried memories and deeply-rooted habits bubble to the surface and can finally be wiped away. Mental flossing – difficult process but well worth it!

5.30.09 6 Hour NORCAL Adventure Race Sprint – We mountain biked a good 11 miles with plenty of uphill bike-pushing, kayaked across a lake and then ran somewhat lost for another 5 or so miles in the hills of Gilroy (with the garlic). Got third place and only a tiny bit of poison oak!!!

5.17.09 Bay to Breakers - 7 mile “race” across San Francisco….not so much running as drinking ;)

5.16.09 Great Urban Race - Crazy scavenger hunt across San Francisco, our team placed 95 out of 469, go Hummingbirds!!

4.25.09 15 mile Black Diamond Mines Regional Park - 3,000+feet elevation. The hike was more like 12 miles but the off-track vertical trailblazing abuse totally made up for the lost mileage. Time for new knees.

4.11.09 7 mile Stinson Beach Race - Amazing beach! The first half was all up (one part even had a ladder to climb!) and the rest was down. Did it in 1:21 with minimal damage this time and shockingly got 6th place out of 155 women (2nd in my age class).

4.5.09 Marin Adventure Race Sprint - 10 mi mountain bike, 3 mile kayak, 4-5 mi trail run, if we hadn’t gone on the wrong path twice it might have taken a bit less than 6 hours!

3.28.09 16 mile Mt. Diablo Hike - The first 8 miles were straight up (almost 5k ft of elevation) and then we jogged the last 8. I hurt.
