Mapping out Health 2.0 Companies

Most people have not heard of Health 2.0 and, as I wrote earlier, even fewer can agree how it should be defined. To help sort through some of this confusion I created a simple “first draft” diagram of what areas some Health 2.0 firms focus on for personal health management:

health-20-space

The inspiration for this diagram comes from the work on Richard Saul Wurman whose career covers founding the TED conference series and authoring over 80 books. The book that sparked my creation is Understanding Healthcare;  a phenomenal example of  information graphics.

Can you provide a one sentence description of health 2.0? Is it about using the web to manage your health?

Are any healthcare providers currently involved in defining Health 2.0 and are they restricted at all by the HIPAA regulations?

Thanks and nice job on the chart.

Health 2.0 is more of a perspective – a social networking, collaborative, transparent approach to health management. In essence, yes it is about using the web/tools to gather info to make health-related decisions, manage health records, and share healthcare experiences.

I think the industry as a whole is in the process of defining Health 2.0, with many players tackling different health aspects. Microsoft and Google are taking on health records and how they are managed, patientslikeme.com is a site to share experiences managing different diseases or doing various treatments. At the moment the space is just too new to be clearly defined beyond its catchy name.

HIPPA certainly has been an influencing factor in stimulating industry growth because it wanted so badly to be the benchmark legislation in mandating digital health records, but it has taken 8+ years so far to implement…Maybe loosening some of the requirements/restrictions will help with adoption.

Web design is an art, I love it. When reading posts like these, it makes me go back in time and think about when I started. It is amazing how much everything has changed over the years. Great post, congrats.
